No, your spdif signal should not lose sync. Please update your signature with your system specs as requested in this thread (http://forums.m-audio.com/showthread.php?t=15); this information will help us troubleshoot your issue. Be sure to include details about your digital source and sync setup.

What is the make and model of your external device?

What is the exact version of the software that you're using?

Is it loosing synch while recording, playing back or both?

Does it loose synch if you're in iTunes or Windows Media Player?

Have you tried increasing the buffer settings in the FW control panel and your recording software?

Are you connecting to an integrated FireWire port or a PCI/PCMCIA/PCIe FireWire adapter?

What is the FireWire chipset?

Make sure that you're using a 75-ohm digital cable rather than an RCA audio cable.

Digidesign recommends all 7.3 users update to 7.3.1cs6 (http://www.digidesign.com/index.cfm?navid=54&langid=100&eid=3178&categoryid=36)

I apologize for my lack of clarification. Please try it in iTunes or WMP without any other programs running to see if you get dropouts.

The A/D & D/A converters are separate from the DMA buffers; all audio passes thru the DMA buffers, including s/pdif.

Please see our KB article related to integrated FW ports (http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=2b420cae8f6a01a4431eeacc05719af3), it is often necessary to use a PCI FW adapter card.

It is the name of the OHCI compliant IEEE 1394 host controller in your IRQ list:

START > RUN > type: “msinfo32” > OK > HARDWARE RESOURCES > IRQs

I apologize I meant to say that it is often necessary to use a PCI FW adapter card w/ a Texas Instruments chipset.
