Getting my 2496 to work in Cubase sx2

I used to record a lot with my setup but i gave up and had a huge PC crash and lost everything abotu 2 years ago.Im trying to set everything up again and im trying to set up Cubase sx2 to hear effects on my audio tracks 'while' recording.As it is just now i can't hear any effects at all im assigning to tracks.Even my standalone alone version of Guitar Rig i can't hear any effects on my guitar?I see everything moving like there is a signal but i never hear an 'effected' guitra signal,anyone help at all?I maybe in the wrong forum site altogether here as as i remember i just left my m-audio card with standard settings and just set up everything in Cubase,never had to touch the card settings!

Can you actually record and playback audio with Cubase? If the only problem is that you can't hear the effects while recording, it sounds like software monitoring isn't enabled.
