Hey,

Im kind of new to this so was just looking for a little bit of help before i go out and buy my equipment. If i buy a 1010 PCI card and i wanted to connect a PreAmp into the soundcard how would i connect it? basically what connection is needed for the inputs on the soundcard?

So my set up would be microphone to preamp via a XLR to XLR....the preamp has 1/4 outputs, so it would be a 1/4 jack to ??? is it a phono wire, like red and white, or is it just another jack i plug into the soundcard?

any help will be appreciated...

The 1010 uses 8 balanced or unbalanced 1/4" inputs and 1 coaxial s/pdif input.

The 1010 LT has 2 balanced XLR inputs, 6 unbalanced RCA inputs and 1 coaxial s/pdif input.

hope this helped!:D

I'm thinking because you said: "If i buy a 1010 PCI card," you're referring to a 1010LT. If you do get a 1010LT:

Just get yourself a XLR cable, one end female the other male, the preamp out will take the female end and u can connect the male end to one of the XLR connetors on the 1010LT.

The Delta-1010 has the rackmount breakout box, plus it has the PCI card which must be installed in the host computer. The Delta-1010LT is merely a PCI card with compact breakout cable.

Hey, you might take a look at the Fast Track Ultra 8R too. It is rackmount with pre-amps built right in. It lacks work clock though, if that is important to you.

yea the one im looking at is just a PCI card with a breakout cable, no box.

Im not sure if the preamp has a XLR output, it doesn't state it when i read up on it. but it does state it has 1/4 unbalanced outputs...so if that is the case, would i just get a 1/4 jack to 1/4jack? or a 1/4 jack in the preamp running to a XLR into the soundcard?

What preamp are you looking at to get? I got my preamp from Guitar Center.

Here's a lsit of preamps on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw/102-9712368-3604155?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=mic+preamps

I have the PreSonus TubePre Microphone Preamp it's a nice one, but there are better ones.

If you get a preamp from a store like Guitar Center the store representative can hep you get a cable to connect it to the 1010LT. Just let the rep know (if he doesn't already know) the type of connectors on the 1010LT.

If your preamp only has 1/4 connector input and output. You can use a XLR Male to 1/4" Male cable like one at this link: http://www.av-cables.net/pro-audio/pro-audio-5.html

thanks the help dude

Hi jcharman:

The preamp you say you're gonna get, the ART Tubepac Tube Mic Preamp / Compressor, has XLR and 1/4 inputs and outputs (notice the feature set in red type below). So you will be set if you get that preamp and an additional XLR cable with 1 female end and 1 male end.

I would have recommended the Presonus preamp I have, and I gave you a link to, but the one you're looking to get appears to be better, plus it has a compressor!

The main features of the ART TUBEPAC include:

Combination Tube Mic/Line Preamplifier and Tube Compressor
Two Hand-Selected 12AX7a Vacuum Tubes
World Famous A R T Sound
The Ultimate Tube DI Box for instruments
Fat and Warm Gain with Musical Dynamics Control
Precision Detented Potentiometers
+48v Phantom Power
Bypassable Compressor Circuitry
Balanced XLR and Unbalanced 1/4 inch Inputs and Outputs
Internal Transformer
Aircraft-Quality Extruded Aluminium Chassis

To go from a preamp with a 1/4" out you just need a 1/4" male to RCA male cable. If you are going to do multiple channels (which is probably why you bought the 1010LT in the first place) then you may want to get a set of 8 of these cables, or an 8-channel mini-snake that goes from 1/4" male plugs to RCA male plugs, in whatever length you need to get from your preamps, to the back of your PC where the inputs are. If you are going this route then you may want to pick up an 8-channel preamp such as the SM Pro Audio PR-8E which I have and which seems fine for the price. Of course the sky's the limit in terms of what you can pay for preamps but for convenience it's nice to have them all in one rack unit rather than have a pile of separate preamps and all their power supplies etc.

Alternatively for channels 1 and 2 can go XLR out from your preamp to XLR in on the 1010LT (only inputs 1 and 2 have XLR ins) but you'll have to change the jumper on the PCI card so that the XLR ins are line level instead of mic level.
