Apologies for posting in this thread but I just can't find a way to start a new thread here. Nothing went right yesterday and it's not looking good today either.

Briefly, this is a quick question about the xp driver. I've got a whole page I could write about trying to install KeyRig49 on a new laptop with Vista that was supposed to be my music computer. It's been years since I've had such a frustrating computer experience and now it's looking like I'm out a hundred bucks. I'm not happy with this product at all.

I have a boxed product and xp pro sp3 on this computer. I downloaded the right driver from the website but it didn't work. Then I found out in the forums that even though I could download a driver for xpsp3 that this wasn't compatible so I searched and found another driver here that was supposed to fix it. Now I have it installed, there are two m-audio drivers in my program list, no device conflicts and I can launch what I think is the software. The problem is that even though it seems to be installed, no sounds can be heard. I can play system sounds, movie, music and even a software keyboard that uses midi, but not this thing.

In the photo you'll see that it can't find where to send the output to because the field is blank. Next to it is my audio properties box. If you can have a look at it and give me some advice that works it would be greatly appreciated. I'm an older guy on disability and my blood pressure has been through the roof. Now I'm going to tackle the Vista problem again (yes I downloaded the 280mb file but that didn't work) and hope that some day I might get a sound from this if only in standalone mode.

Do you have an M-Audio USB sound card/audio interface? Can you select the RealTek sound card from the drop down where M-Audio USB ASIO is currently displayed?

Yes I have an M-Audio Fast Track Pro, and I also have a Digitech RP150 Modelling processor, neither of which are hooked up right now as I hadn't even thought of that. And no, Realtech (my onboard audio in my Amd 3400+) doesn't show up anywhere. I'll send a few more screenshots, a picture is worth a thousand words eh?

I hope I'm missing something simple with the xp one, still can't do anything with the vista one though but I appreciate your advice.

This is the latest attempt after uninstalling 330mb file and driver from Add/Remove.

Installation of KeyRig_Vista on computer with xp sp3 as suggested.-

Ran M-Audio Key Rig Setup.exe

An error occured while trying to read the source file:
The source file "H:\Key Rig Data\SP-1 Patches\*" does not exist.

The source file DOES exist in that exact place.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++

Set Key Rig Data Location.app folder contains
Info.plist 1kbPLIST File
PkgInfo 1kb File
MacOS folder which contains Set Key Rig Data Location 89kb File

doesn't have a program to open it with.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I had noticed that even though the last install that I tried the "Steinberg" folder didn't exist anywhere in my program files so I couldn't copy any files to a non-existent folder. During setup that was the default location that it was supposed to be in. This time it couldn't find SP1 so no choice but to abort setup.

So the cd doesn't work and the sp3 workaround that is supposed to fix it doesn't work, it won't work even as a standalone and the Vista one looks hopeless after three tries.

I need some answers please.

This last post showed up in the forum right away but my last one didn't. I've had a lot of problems with this forum not recognizing my logins so I'll send the three screenshots that I sent before in case they weren't received. I'm not going to try to remember all the words I said in that message, this is frying my brain.

If anyone is watching this thread you should know that I have previously sent two posts before this last one but since they contain photos they have to be moderated first and haven't shown up yet.

OK, for the SP3 system that you aren't getting audio from. I would recommend connecting the Fast Track Pro and your speakers to it so you can have the best performance with the lowest latency. You should be able to download this zip file (http://forums.m-audio.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=175&d=1228869701) and place the files in the locations specified in the ReadMe to manually update Key Rig on SP3 to version 1.1.0.4v4 (Note that the about Menu still shows the older version), however, once updated, instead of the existing drop downs to choose the audio card, you will have an M-Audio Key Rig Menu where you can choose preferences to select your audio card. This updated version does not require an ASIO driver and should allow you to select your built-in audio card.

Now, on Vista, the error about the source file. This only seems to happen on certain systems; we could only get it to happen on one of our computers. Anyhow, you should still be able to proceed with the installation. When it finished, manually copy the Key Rig data folder to C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins\M-Audio. Then open the Data folder and double click the file "Set KeyRig Data Location". After doing this, you should be able to run the KeyRig _Updater to update Key Rig for Vista Compatibility.

Thanks for the advice and I'm going to start over once again although I have tried those exact things a few times. One problem with the xp3 machine that I just realized is that it is 64 bit (the Vista sp1 is 32 bit). I saw a list of apps compatible with 64 bit and KeyRig49 wasn't on it. I'll try again but please let me know if that's the problem on that machine.

The problem with the Vista one is that the Key Rig Data Locator isn't an exe file, even if I rename it. I'm downloading it again to see if there's a chance that file was corrupt.

Note: I've just noticed that the driver download stopped after 54mb which is highly unusual. I'll try again using a download manager.

Well this time the install barely started when I got the message to run the key rig locator app to find the data. This screencap shows the file you suggested unzipped and on the C drive. Same as the other times there is no exe to run, just a file. And the same happens after downloading the file on the vista sp1 computer.

Yeah, it looks like it's missing the set data location for XP. We are putting together an updated folder for download. I'll let you know when it's posted so you can grab it.

Key Rig hasn't been tested on Vista 64-bit. You may be able to install it by right-clicking the setup file and choosing to run in XP compatibility mode. You would then want to try manually updating to 1.1.0.4v4 like you do for SP3. You will want to wait for this updated folder to be posted first though.

- the 'fix' file is the same one for xp sp3 as the one for vista so they both have the same problem. Neither has an executable app to run the data locator. There are two folders that for some reason have a .app extension, set key rig data location.app and also m-audio certify.app. Inside both are a contents folder, then a MacOS folder in which the exes are supposed to reside and neither file is executable. In a previous download I even found a file that I could read with Notepad saying "Appl?" inside that folder which is indicative of another problem.

-my first step was to locate and download the drivers from the website and it was no problem getting one for xp sp3 and vista sp1, or so I thought. After neither worked I found the supposed fixes here in the forum. Neither can find it's data and there is no app to find it with. I couldn't reach the point where I would use the updater or the 1.1.0.4 file posted here.

-I gave up and used the cd which let me certify it on the xp but it didn't install properly. I then re-downloaded those large files again and the same things happened. I don't know if it ever really got certified or not so I'm not sure that the store could resell this one. This has been a bad experience, I'll refrain from saying more.

I saw your reply after I had posted what I thought was my final message. Thanks for working on it and I'll wait until you get something together.

For the record, my Vista is sp1 and 32 bit, not 64. My xp is sp3 and 64 bit. I'll try to calm down and wait for your reply.

Well I've calmed down, but I won't bother with any editing of previous messages because they should probably be kept there as a historical record for the next person with software issues on store-bought hardware in this rapidly-changing music world...especially for 'experienced' musicians.

This keyboard probably worked for 99/100 people...there must be some user error involved here. Probably because although I've been playing musical instruments for over fifty years (4-12 piano, 15-present guitars) , I'm just starting to dive in to the world of midi.

So my first goal with this keyboard is to play a C chord and hear it through my computer and see the KeyRig panel and then change it to a string sound and play some Bach or Beethoven. Then I'll learn to interface with Traction 3 and record it and then...?

I think we both know that I'm just missing an executable data locator in the file that is to be used on either/or xp sp3 64-bit or vista sp1 32-bit computers so I'm counting on you guys to figure out a way. I'll work on the rest myself, let's just get this going on at least one computer please. And thank you in advance for your patience!

The Key Rig software has not been qualified for XP-64; I'm not sure if it works. Here is a zip file containing the "Set Key Rig Data Location.exe" file. You can place this .exe file in the Key Rig Data folder.

Well I think I have it installed but I haven't been able to make a sound yet. It can find it's data now though. On the xp computer the 'safely remove hardware' icon is in the tray but key rig is in my program list and Tracktion3 recognizes it. On vista there's no icon in the tray but there's no drop-down lists for output although I can get to preferences which like the xp shows a blank box for midi devices. I found that you have to make sure the Key Rig Data folder has to be on the root of the C drive to get this far. This has tired me out, thanks for your help, I'll spend some time trying figure out how to make some sounds in standalone mode first.

There are a variety of things that can prevent applications from being able to see/use the Keyboard even though the system does see it. Try connecting the keyboard to different USB ports.

I took a break and I've finally got it working as a standalone after I re-installed xp on a freshly formatted drive. It's great, but it hangs and task manager can't kill it, I have to do a hard shutdown.

After reinstalling I made the mistake of installing sp3 again but it really messed my computer up however I managed to uninstall it. So now I have xp sp2 on a 64 bit amd athlon 3400 with two gigs of ram. I've seen that 64 bit isn't supported in either xp or vista. But after finally getting this working I don't want to give up, I'm really liking this. Is the hanging problem due to it being 64 bit? Is there a workaround? I have it working also on vista 64 bit but haven't used it much to see how it reacts because I've been focusing on this computer but that driver seems to be ok right now. Any ideas?

PS - I have it working fine with Kontakt Player from Native Instruments, no hanging, but right now prefer the Keyrig standalone app.

Unfortunately I'm not sure about the hanging issue. You're the only person I know of who has even tried installing Key Rig on XP-64. You could try going into MSCONFIG and disabling startup items and non-microsoft services to see if one of them is interfering. You could also try manually updating to 1.1.0.4v4 by downloading the zip file form the Key Rig Vista 64bit thread and see if that helps.

Well I guess it's good to be the first to try something new. I had already updated as you suggest and made sure the data folder was C://KeyRigData (it can't be put anywhere else). So it starts and works just fine but won't shut down and I can't spend a lot of time manually rebooting and waiting for Chkdsk to fix the errors. As mentioned, it's on a fresh install of xp on a new drive and it's running pretty lean right now with few unnecessary processes going on. Event viewer just shows 'hanging app' and I can't see if there's a conflict anywhere.

I've been reading through this forum and see there's many unhappy people with 64 bit machines because their M-Audio stuff doesn't work. I thought more was better until I realized that there's little 64bit support for many of the music apps out there. Luckily Kontakt player works and I'll try to find out what else. In the future I'll have to research my purchases more carefully.
