I've just recieved an Octane preamp, and I'm trying to get it to work with my Firewire 1814. I followed the FAQ at http://www.m-audio.com/index.php?do=support.faq&ID=c6f73e27f255bd68b1d3f0c94da8e9fc, and it hasn't quite worked out for me.

I have the external sync set to the "external-digital" setting, defaulted to 44.1k, and the Octane is switched down to 44.1k as well. The digital port input is also set to ADAT.

The problem that I'm having is that all of the lights on the octane will come on for 20-30 seconds at a time, no audio will pass through, and the sample rate selector in the 1814 driver panel will turn red and show the lock to the right being unlocked.

After that, all the lights on the Octane will go off (except power) and the sample rate selector in the 1814 driver panel will turn green again and the lock will be locked. During this time, audio will pass through the octane and everything will work as normal. Whenever it switches from one condition to the other, I will hear a 1-5 clicks/pops.

After a few seconds, all the lights will come back on and it will return to an unusable state.

Also, whenever the Octane lights up and the sample rate unlocks, the ADAT IN indicator on the 1814 will blink, and when they turn back off and the sample rate locks again, the indicator on the 1814 will glow solid.

As far as I can understand, the Octane and 1814 seem to be syncing and de-syncing at will.

Is the Octane defective, or am I missing some setup procedure?

It sounds like the Octane may be defective. If you disconnect the ADAT cable and test using the analog outputs, do you experience problems? Do all the lights go on?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I just tried it out, the lights still come on just using the analog outs, and they'll even come on when it's just plugged into power and not connected to anything. I'm assuming this would lead toward the defective side, I just got the Octane for christmas so it's still well under warranty, it was ordered from an authorized online retailer (Musician's Friend). If defective, should it be sent to M-Audio or back to the retailer for replacement?

Since you just got the device, you should be withing Musicians Friends exchange period. I would suggest contacting them first to exchange for a new unit.
