Hi folks.

A number of people have run into the problem with capacitors in the Delta 1010 breakout box.

I've successfully resurrected 2 1010s and have a website up documenting the process. Hopefully it'll be of some help to folks here.

The site's at http://delta.brainiac.com

Let me know if it's been helpful or if there's anything worth adding to it.

You rule beyond belief. I have three Delta 1010's and I've sent one in for repair before and now I have another out. I bought enough capacitors to repair more than five racks for less than $20 with tax and shipping included.

Just got my 1010 back from the repair shop for the same problem. What I really want to know is how long have M-Audio been aware of this problem and why have they done nothing about it? How much extra would it cost to put some decent solid state capacitors in instead? An extra couple of bucks maybe?

Another example of M-Audio bean counters screwing over their loyal customers and releasing a known substandard product that could be fixed for peanuts but, hey, most of them last 12 months and then it's the suckers', sorry customers', problem.

I can't tell you how happy I am that you've been able to repair your 1010 based on my website. It definitely made the work in putting it up worthwhile.

I've saved a copy of your website to .pdf in case my one goes again, Joe. Knowing M-Audio, they probably just replaced the cheapo 16v caps with more 16v caps so I'll thank you in advance for when the 1010 time bomb goes off again.

Pretty shocking that M-Audio must have known about this issue for years and the price of a 35V 10000+ hour @105c cap is as low as 60 cents and they've still done nothing.

I think people who've had to pay to get these repairs done should look at some sort of class action claim against MA.

Joe - MANY thanks! I have 3 Delta 1010's all 3 had the same problem. I had a spare 500mfd cap hangin around and tried installing it tonight. Works perfectly. Now I don't have to delay my recording project. Only took 1 hr and I was expecting a delay of weeks for repair!

I hate to be such a noob, but I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what parts I need to order from DigiKey. A friend of mine who builds modular synths has volunteered to replace the capacitors for me, but I'm not sure what exactly I need to order. When I search on DigiKey the criteria is so vast I have no idea what I'm looking for.

Because the capacitors are so cheap, I was going to just get an entire set rather than pull the Delta 1010 apart and figure out which ones are bad. It sounds like they're all crappy/low voltage so I'd rather replace all of them.

Can someone help point me to the right capacitors? Thanks!!

These are what I'm looking at ordering...

This thread rules! Thanks Joe! M-Audio just repaired my bad capacitors. However, if they ever go bad again, I'll just have my mom show me how to replace them (she assembles computers boards for a living).

I think it would be a good idea for JA to advise users who make a new thread about the noise from the breakout box to read this thread first, as I'm sure some of these users would be interested in learning how to repair this device themselves....or maybe thats just me :)

if anyone could find a source for Solid State capacitors, i'd like to see if there's a difference to the electrolytic.

hell, i'd even do it on mine. not sure where i could get these exact capacitors though, at least in a solid state version.

Thank you Joe!
The world needs more guys like you willing to post links with photos and start threads like this.
(The good you've done shall reap golden rays of Karma unto you and your offspring!) [grin]

So beyond the power supply, does anyone know of any mods or repairs to the audio channels' caps?
'looks like some DC coupling (or is that de-coupling?) going on there...and mo' electrolytics...

Any other known mods or upgrade tricks for better quality through-put from these ol' work horses?
(I've got two and love 'em - everything is actually WORKING...imagine that...)

Thanks all.

Peace & Good Health,
MG

I've had a computer crash yesterday which required a pc power reset, and since then i've experienced similar symptoms with my second hand Delta 1010...

In short: The breakout-box outputs loud noise, the input level meters stay high (100%) and music programs cannot open the soundcard (or at least for input); they hang on doing so.

I'm thinking of replacing the capacitors like described above (unless someone has another suggestion) and hoping it helps. I'll report the results!

Cheers! (and thx for the info!)

Replacing the capacitors is exactly what I would do. Let us know the result.

I've brought the breakout-box and pci-card to the electronics lab at my work and decided to first test the PCI card without breakout box. It was not recognized half of the time. (The pc did not even see the card (AMD 9650 quad with MCP61 chipset mobo)).
When it did recognize the card the mixer showed random spikes at different channels (still without breakout).

The capacitors in the breakout-box look like they're still good and all voltage regulators measure correct values (+- 5 and +- 15). On the pci-card no visible broken components can be seen either, so i'm stuck...

Any suggestions?

i've read out the EEPROM memory from the pci-card, maybe someone can crosscheck it with a good/working card? see http://crappymeal.nl/tmp/24lc02b.txt for the content (in hex)

any info would be nice! Cheers
