I recently purchased a delta 44 with the intention of using it within linux (ubuntu 8.10) and windows. When I tried to install the linux drivers I found that I was unable to unpack them. I tried this with all versions/ rpm//deb/tar. but when trying to install them I receive the message "could not open (package name) the package may be corrupted or you are not allowed to open the file. Please check the permissions of the file." Normally you just make the file executable and log in as root but this does not work and the installation instructions are no help what so ever. The only sound I get out of the box within ubuntu is the drum roll login but no welcome sound. I get no sound within rhythmbox it crashes instead and I get no sound in firefox or anything else I have tried.

Any help will be greatly appreciated as I am seriously considering putting this card on ebay!
Thanks.

You shouldn't have to install anything to get your Delta 44 to work in Linux. The drivers are included in all major distributions of Linux these days, and should "just work".

Have you tried to get any sound out without doing a driver installation?

Yeah, I have and thats how I know that I do have some sound. As you correctly stated oss and alsa have been included with most distros for some time now and oss is listed as already installed when I look in the packet manager so I am at a total loss of what to do.

OK, you hear some sound, so drivers aren't the issue. You don't need to install any drivers. It's just a configuration issue at this point.

Have you taken a look at envy24control? It's a GUI that provides a control interface that uses M-Audio's Windows control panel as a model. I'm not sure where it would be in the menu interface (I use a window manager called FluxBox, instead of Gnome or KDE). You can see if it's on your system by opening a terminal window and entering the command envy24control and you should then be able to see whether your media players are sending output to the card. If you see the meters bouncing under the "Monitor PCMs" tab, you're most of the way there.

Check your Patchbay/Router tab and make sure your HW outs are connected to your PCM outs.

I'm 90% sure that envy24control's in Ubuntu 8.10, but if it's not, you'll have to Google a bit on how to find it - I've installed and used Ubuntu, but my own systems are all Fedora-based.
