I'm setting up my studio. I'm waiting on my monitors, but my headphones just came in today (sony MDR 7506). I'm connecting them to an m-audio audiophile 192 soundcard via a berhinger UB1202 mixer. I hooked two analog outputs (l/r) to line in channels 1 & 2 on the mixer, panned hard left/right. The headphones are plugged into the "phones" jack, of course.
The way the headphones behave just doesn't make sense to me. I don't seem to be able to get stereo. Even so, the mono that I do get doesn't seem to act in a coherent manner. No matter how I adjust the pan on the mixer, all the sound comes dead center. The audio comes from both channels, but the balance makes no difference.
If I adjust the balance on the windows volume control panel, then sliding the slider far left makes no difference (still comes dead center). Sliding it far right, however, cuts the signal. No matter how I switch around cables, the sides don't change.
In the m-audio control panel, the meter registers audio on both channels, but only the left volume slider makes a difference. If I slide the left slider all the way down, then the volume mutes and the left channel shows no signal, but the right meter just bounces away, with no accompanying audio.
I've done a great deal of trouble shooting. Nothin seems to change my situation. I need some ideas.
I'm hoping this is a newbie mistake on my part. Any advice is appreciated.

Which outputs are you connected to? The Main Outputs or the Monitor outputs? I would suggest connecting to the Monitor Outputs as this enables you to hear input to and output from the computer.

Test 1 output at a time, and test both inputs on your mixer. Also swap cables; this can help identify where the problem may be.

I did all that. Found where the problem is through more research.

Windows XP MCE.
