What kind of external "pci slot" box would work well to connect the Delta1010 audio card to a laptop via PCMIA or USB? Does this even exist? I'm having trouble getting quality search results for such a device.
This type of configuration hasn't been tested and isn't officially supported. I'd suggest looking into a USB 2.0 or FireWire interface to use with a laptop; something like the Fast Track Ultra 8R or ProFire 2626; they're both rack mountable and have 8 mic/line inputs. If you're really set on an expansion chassis, I'd suggest looking at the the ones Digidesign recommends for use with Pro Tools HD.

I've long wondered about this myself, and had exactly the same problem of search result relevancy (everything is a PCI card with USB ports or a PCMCIA slot). Other forums have similar discussions, check it out: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=183064

I'd say this is not very promising, JA is right, even if you do find an adapter. It's likely that Firewire is getting the brunt of the development these days, so you are probably going to get better drivers for a Firewire Interface than for an aging PCI card that they can barely support on its native bus. Take a look at the status of 64 bit drivers for the Deltas, or even 32 bit Vista drivers, and you'll agree that if any of the M-Audio hardware will remain usable on a modern system, it's not likely to be the Deltas.
