I installed a second 1010LT, everything went smooth after a somewhat convoluted driver install (remove driver by running driver installation, re-run driver installation ,reboot (ok if you already have cards installed), xp finds new hardware, install drivers automatically)

I plugged the RCA jacks into insert I/O on mixer ,ran the multimedia setup tool (everything disabled except the output and input ports (no multi, spdif or monitoring) ,ran the asio test successfully with the latest driver for winXP SP3 (5.10.00.5069v3).

I cranked down asio samples in M-audio control panel for less latency (to 128 from 256)

When monitoring is enabled in my recording program, when I talk into a mic plugged into any given channel (mono) on the first card everything works great.
On the second card it was good, then after a few seconds it would start distorting, then good again for a few seconds. This would cycle like that, on all channels on the 2nd card.

I tried reverting to older drivers (which worked, (no distortion, but would fail the sync test). Tried a lot of other stuff, BIOS settings, hardware optimization guide for winXP etc etc , none of which worked.

So I was sitting there with a bunged up computer, no further adhead than I was 2 days ago, I restored the computer to the fresh install (you set restore points, dont you ;) ).

Plugging everything in fresh yielded the same result, good on card 1, phasing in and out distortion on the second card. It reminded me of BFO (radio), just as if stuff wasnt synched properly.

Just for the hell of it, it tried hooking a video cable from SPDIF out on card 1 to SPDIF in on card 2. I think any RCa to RCA cable will work) In the hardware tab of the Maudio control panel under sync source I left card 1 on internal, on card 2 set it to 'external - spdif'

With baithed breath i tried the mics on card 1, works like before.

On card 2 I spoke into the mic, waiting for the distortion ... and waited ... and waited.

Sucess!!

Afternote: I tried running the multimedia setup again, it failed when

Hi Paul

Yes, everything is working well since I connected the SPDIF in/out.
