Thread: Is the Vista driver for Transit abandonware?

  1. #1

Default Is the Vista driver for Transit abandonware?

I'm currently using the M-Audio Transit under Windows Vista and I'm finding that the Beta driver really isn't up to the task. Is there anyone else out there that thinks that it's about time we saw a respectable Vista driver for the Transit?

I know it's a beta driver, and I'm glad that it actually exists, but "beta" usually indicates that development is underway and that a more stable and useful version will follow. The current Transit Vista driver was released July 2007; it's now been in beta for a year and a half with not even a revised beta released.

Why is this not good enough?

There must be a growing number of people out there who are getting new computers and for whom Vista is the only option available. The current driver needs magic to make it install and work properly, plus the control panel interface is essentially broken, limiting what one can actually do with the Transit under Vista.

M-Audio: Is 18 months not enough time to make even an incremental improvement to this driver?

I know I'm being direct in my tone, but I would genuinely like to hear from someone at M-Audio about this.

    Thanks.

There have been a number of setbacks in the the release of a new driver for the Transit. A new driver is in the works, but a couple of key issues need to be resolved.

Hi, I just wanted to know if there are any news on this.

I'm mostly into producing/remixing right now so I can live with a casual glitch (I've already been doing the usb troubleshooting and minimized the problem) because when I generate the WAV file, it sounds clean.... But it's really a shame to have such a great piece of hardware and not being able to even listen to an MP3 without glitches... I mean, it could be acceptable on a ****ty onboard card but M-Audio is pro stuff...

Is the problem only on MP3s?

Thanks for your answer Paul, I really appreciate it.

No, no, not just mp3. I was just pointing that even playing an mp3 on any popular media player does that, and those programs aren't high cpu-consuming. Thus, I don't think it's too much of a performance problem, I'm more inclined to think it's some obscure IRQ or some other resource conflict. I'm working with Ableton Live right now but I tested it with some other DAWs. For MP3 I use mostly winamp, but also tried with WMP, foobar, and mediamonkey. Same results everywhere, so I wouldn't blame it on a single app.

But, as I said, I minimized a LOT the problem with all the tips on usb troubleshooting, improving audio performance, etc on this site. And I don't play live so if it glitches I just curse a lot, and press play again. It's annoying and all that but at least I can work fine, and when I render the wav file there are no glitches at all. However I think a finished driver for Vista should be high on the priority list so far, given the fact that windows xp is no longer shipped with new machines.

BTW, I'll go a little further with the question: Windows 7 is on the horizon, I already got comments that the beta version already has a better performance than Vista AND XP, and that says a lot. So, are you already working with microsoft on drivers for windows 7? I mean maybe developing a vista driver at this point is pointless. Just curious, I don't know how it works, maybe the vista driver will work there, maybe not.

    Regards

Try turning off the M-Audio Taskbar Icon in MSConfig Startup. Hold down the function key and then press the R key to launch the Run function. Type in msconfig and click OK. Click on the Startup tab and un-select M-Audio Taskbar Icon. Click OK and restart the computer.

    Hey Paul

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately it didn't make a difference. Should I let it off or you advice me to turn it back on?
I think maybe it could be a buffer problem? last night in winamp it started glitching TOO much. I closed the application, started it again, and the glitch was minimal again (not disappeared, but minimal).
As a note, I set all buffers to maximum, since latency is not an issue for me when playing mp3.
