Thread: SPDIF passthrough in Windows 7 beta (32-bit)?

Default SPDIF passthrough in Windows 7 beta (32-bit)?

    Hi all,
I am using the Revo 5.1 and recently installed Windows 7 beta together with the Revo Vista 32-bit drivers.

I'm having some issues with the SPDIF output which feeds into my receiver.

Under WinXP, I could vary the PCM sample rate under foobar with resampler plugin, setting it to 88kHz, or 96kHz, or whatever, and the receiver would immediately sync to the new rate. (When playing 44.1 kHz source material I will use 88kHz upsampling, whereas for 48kHz source, 96kHz is better)

Now it doesn't work at all, and the only way to change the rate is to manually set it in "Sample Settings" in the M-Audio control panel. This will then force the correct rate to the receiver.

Also, I cannot get dolby digital or DTS pass-through to work at all under Windows 7, this used to be fine in WinXP.

So I'm forced to use my mobo's integrated SPDIF if I want DD/DTS pass-through when watching DVDs or videos with dolby audio track. That the mobo SPDIF pass-through works but not the Revo suggest a problem with the Revo driver itself. (I gather people have had similar problems under Vista..)

If there is a fix for this I'd love to hear it.

The other issue I notice is with Revo control panel configured to mute my line-in, whenever Win7 is rebooted the line-in behaves as though it is unmuted, even though the option remains checked in the control panel. I then have to manually uncheck and re-check the mute box to silence the line-in. Very frustrating. At least this was well-behaved under WinXP.

Are any updates to the Revo 5.1 Vista driver planned for the near future?

I discovered that the M-Audio SPDIF device doesn't work at all under Windows 7. For example, if I go to Win7 Sound panel and try to select it as the default device, there is no sound in any program. Also if I right-click and select "Test" there is nothing.

And I noticed there is not a volume meter showing up next to it, unlike with other audio devices that are properly installed and working.

You can see this in the following snapshot:-

The motherboard SPDIF shows the volume meter next to it, indicating it is properly set up. This is absent with the M-Audio SPDIF.

It seems the Vista drivers are not fully compatible with Windows 7 at this stage. I really hope this can be fixed in a future update as Win7 is much better than Vista and I've no doubt a lot of users will eventually upgrade to it.

Problems with SPDIF and obvious bugs like the line-in mute described above should be rectified. Thanks.

    Hi cvxmelody,
    1. Please disable digital output device (spdif), digital output (high definition) & Revo 5.1 audio.
    2. Select Revo 5.1 (spdif) as your default device.
    3. Reboot your system.
Let us know if Windows 7 detects Revo 5.1 (spdif) on startup.

Thanks very much for the tip.

Unfortunately I experienced a disaster yesterday when I went to delete some files on my C: and somehow, Windows 7 corrupted the partition so it's now unreadable :-(( The system no longer boots up, so I'll just have to reformat the drive and will probably go back to using Vista for the time being

Nevertheless I hope that when the time comes to upgrade to the final version of Win7, M-Audio will have fully working Revo 5.1 drivers :-)

Just to give an update. I've reinstalled Windows 7 32-bit (my earlier problem of hard drive crashing was a hardware problem with the HDD itself - can't blame W7 at all).

Playing around some more I discovered that foobar in conjunction with the Revo 5.1 native ASIO driver works beautifully. I can resample at any supported frequency of the receiver and it locks on perfectly. Just download the foo_out_asio.dll component and install it inside the foobar components folder. No need for Directsound at all.

Also noticed with this new Win7 installation, that the Revo SPDIF in the Sound control panel now has the volume bar next to it (like it's supposed to). But when I click Test, there is still no sound coming through the speakers.
