Default DD, DTS, and windows sound issues with Vista 32bit

I have a Revolution 7.1 on Vista Ultimate 32bit. I have it hooked up to a set of Logitech Z-5500 speakers via Digital Coax. If I set "Speakers" as the default in the Sound panel... I can hear the windows sounds and play stereo, and dolby prologic, but no DD or DTS.
If I set "SPDIF Interface" as the default, I can get DD and DTS, but nothing else! I'd really like to be able to play all my media files without having to switch the defaults. any Ideas on how to do this? I have the M-Audio control panel set to "Digital" either way

What applications are you using to play stereo sound (besides system sounds)? And what apps are you using for DD or DTS audio?

I've only been using windows media player, and the Media Center. I use this, because I'd eventually like to be able to just have my machine boot into Media Center.

I went back to Windows XP, only because I'm determined to use the card I paid $90 for only 6 month or so ago. It's all working good now (but doesnt look as fancy as Vista). Needless to say, I won't be buying another M-Audio product for my computer. I tried everything I could to make it work. I scoured the internet for nights looking for a solution. I will definetly do my research the next time I buy a sound card. I will buy one with better support behind it.

I am having the same issue. I have my receiver hooked up to the spdif. In vista I bring up the sound playback devices, there are 2 devices listed: Speakers and SPDIF. When you right click the speaker device and do "Test" I can hear sound through my receiver. When I right click on the spdif and do a "Test," I cannot hear any sound. I am trying to use this card in a home theater and have all DD DTS AC3 as well as PCM stereo audio come through the spdif. In vista the way to do that is to set the spdif to the default playback device. When I do that though, I only hear DD DTS and AC3. No stereo sound (TV w/ no DD just PCM.) I have the revo control panel set on Digital.

We just tested the Revo 5.1 and 7.1 on Vista 32 using Power DVD 8, iTunes, and Windows Media Center; with the Windows default playback assigned to the Revo S/PDIF output and the speaker set to Digital, we were able to get PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS. We did not have to change the default playback device.

I'm having the same problem as described above. My Revolution 7.1 is connected to my A/V receiver via digital coax and the M-Audio control panel is set to digital. The Windows sound control is set to spdif as the default. DD and DTS play fine but nothing else. If I change the Windows sound control default to speakers, then I get system sounds and stereo, but no DD or DTS.

In other words, using Vista Media Center, I can play DVDs in surround sound, but I hear no system sounds and no audio from stereo media sources. If I switch the Windows control panel to speakers as default, then everything will play, but DVDs no longer play DD/DTS.

JA... you say above that you tested the 7.1 on Vista 32 using Windows Media Center and everything worked as it should. Can you give the specific settings used to achieve this? Because I'm obviously missing something.

I just installed the Revo 7.1 (5063v2 driver) on a different Vista 32-bit system. Once installed I set the Windows default playback device to be the Revo S/PDIF, and I changed the speaker set to Digital in the Revo control panel. I was able to playback stereo (PCM) audio with Windows Media Player. I then put in a DVD and was able to playback Dolby Digital with Windows Media Center without changing any settings. I then switched and used WMC to playback stereo music without having to change any settings.

I don't know why this setup isn't working for you. Try disabling your built-in sound card and if you have any virtual audio devices, disable these as well and see if that has any effect.

Onboard audio disabled; no virtual audio devices.

With the same configuration as yours, I get no stereo PCM audio with Windows Media Player. Without changing settings, I get DD and DTS with Windows Media Center but again, no stereo. If I switch the Windows default playback device to Speakers I get the opposite result, except that DVDs still play but only in stereo.

Tres bizarre.

Hi, I had the same problem with the Revo5.1 on Windows 7 64bit.

However, with the help of a friend I managed to fix it and here's how to do it (I think it'll work for the Revo7.1 as well). The solution lies in the Via Envy24HT chipset (both the 5.1 and 7.1 use this chipset).

You can replace the m-audio drivers with the Envy24HT drivers (to be found here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp).

Under Windows 7 you do the following:

open device manager
right click on M-Audio Revolution 5.1 and select "Update Driver Software..."
Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
Click "Have Disk..."
Browse to the correct map (in my case it was Envy24_Family_DriverV540a\VIAEnvyAud\Drivers\V64WD M). I think V64WDM stands for Vista 64bit.
Select the "Envy24 Family Audio Controller WDM" and click "Next"

This should now install the driver. You will still have the M-Audio Configuration utility where you can select "Digital" and you can set your Windows Audio Device to "S/PDIF".

Now both stereo, DTS and DD should work on your pc. The Via Envy24HT driver is probably a solution to most people's problems with Revolution cards and Windows7.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Perrin
